    Book details

This is the history of Prudence Bells family, going back several generations to set the scene for the missionary couple, Herbert and Elizabeth, who went out to Xinzhou, Shanxi Province, China, and were brutally killed in the Boxer Rebellion in 1900. It is a thoroughly written historical account, which ends on a high note when Prudence visits the church of the martyrs in 2006, to receive an astonishing welcome, discovering she is the answer to their prayers, and that the church of her great-grandparents has a congregation of over three thousand. Quite harrowing in places, but with an ultimately happy ending, this is an inspiring read for anyone facing the challenges of truly living all-out for Christ in a hostile world.

A vividly told and deeply moving story of love, witness and martyrdom, which throws a clear light on the roots of the great present expansion of Christian faith in China by tracing the record of one missionary family s service in the nineteenth century. --Archbishop Rowan Williams, Master of Magdalene College, Cambridge, former Archbishop of CanterburyA gripping narrative set against epic events. A story about what is lost in the storm of terrible events and what, against all expectation, somehow survives. --Fintan O'Toole, Assistant Editor, The Irish TimesThis is a BRILLIANT book! One of the most riveting I ever read in my life. Once I had started I simply had to keep going. What a remarkable story! --Jennifer Rees Larcombe

This is a book that is well worth reading and which I found inspirational. The fact that Prudence Bell had access to such detailed information about her great grandparents, and even the generations prior to that, is a gift. That information was well put together in this book to provide an engaging account of the lives of these missionaries in China. This is a story that tells of the impact that their lives, and their deaths, had on future generations and on the present day church. Prudence Bell and her husband were able to go to China and visit the place where her great grandparents lived and died. They saw first hand the legacy that Prudence's ancestors left behind. That personal experience helps this book to stand out above other historical biographies. As I was drawn into the account, the past and the present no longer seemed so far removed. I highly recommend taking the time to read this book. Ir's a privilege to share in what God did through this missionary couple.
